Nowadays, it has become easier to collect and store information through modern communication tools and to share it between individuals, institutions and even countries.

This situation disrupted the balance of interests between the persons who create, obtain or hold the personal data as well as the persons to whom this data is related, and the data owners. As a matter of fact, as access to such information becomes easier, the material and spiritual assets of data owners are adversely affected and the need to protect their interests emerge.

In addition, with the importance given to the human rights in modern societies, the need to protect personal data increases, which is considered within the framework of personal rights. Therefore, the issue of personal data protection has been subject to various types of regulations in contemporary societies.

Applied Competition Law Seminars – 2019

Compiled from the papers presented in the 2019 Spring semester, this is the second book in the Applied Competition Law Seminars series. The book consists of 16 articles on current Competition Law issues. Technology markets, which is one of the popular subjects of Competition Law in recent years, constitute the most important subject in the book. Articles on the other topics such as big data, artificial intelligence, data in e-commerce, decisions regarding digital platforms, disruptive innovation involved can also be found under this heading.

In the book, there are articles discussing concrete competition problems in some markets such as the movie making, banking and payment systems, and electricity markets. Studies on the current practices of the Competition Board is also presented. Examples of these studies include behavioral commitments, rejections on Mergers and Acquisitions transactions, and articles examining the enforcement policy of the Competition Board.

Also, the book includes studies on the current normative trends in the Competition Law; articles on protectionist tendencies, debates on the necessity of a more intrusive approach in concentration control, and the draft law. Within this context, the topics covered in the book constitute a crucial source of information in terms of its diversity and timeliness.
